Long Beach Beekeepers
Have you fallen in love with the honey bees in your garden or during a visit to Beekeeping 101? Are you ready to take the next step to become a full fledged beekeeper? Do you want to get a jump on the 2024 season? We have exactly the thing for you!
Our Bee Prepared course provides the instruction and hands-on experience to turn a beginner into a confident backyard beekeeper. Topics include hive management, bee biology, recognizing and treating common diseases and predators, legal requirements of keeping bees in Long Beach, and more.
After completing the course successfully and at the club's discretion, participants are eligible to receive a starter bee colony when available at no additional cost. Frames and other hive equipment are generally not included, but at this time we *may* have some excess hive equipment available for Bee Prepared students.
This class is structured as follows: There will be an in-person introductory group class on Saturday, October 14, from 8-10 a.m. at our Willow-Springs Bee Sanctuary, followed by two evening online classes on Tuesdays October 17 and 24, 7-9 p.m. The class also includes one 2-hour in-person mentorship session working in hives with an experienced beekeeper on a Saturday or Sunday morning, second half of October (dates TBA). Additional mentorship sessions are available. NOTE: each person will need their own beekeeping suit, gloves, hive tool, and smoker for the mentorship session.
Please save these dates in your calendar: 10/14/23 8-10 a.m. in person; 10/17/23 and 10/24/23 7-9 p.m. online (two Zoom meetings); one mentorship session TBA (weekends, second half of October).
