The Willow Springs Bee Sanctuary will be open for volunteers to come and help maintain, clean, and organize our site. Registration for this event is required.

Please wear closed shoes and sun protection. Bring drinking water and work gloves. If available, please also bring gardening tools such as a rake, hoe, shovel or any other tools. Bee suit not required, but if you have one, please bring it. We will be weeding as well as planting a new pollinator garden.

Volunteer Hub: Eagle Scout Project (25 Jul 2026)

If you have attended a club meeting recently, you know that we have a wonderful improvement in the works at the Willow Springs Bee Sanctuary. Eagle Scout Andy Nguyen will be installing an accessibility walkway connecting the parking area to the hexagon enclosure. This work will take place over the course of 6-8 work parties. Andy could use a few heads / hands. If you are available for an hour or two... or four, please drop by any time during the work party window: 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., with a break somewhere in there for lunch.

Please wear closed shoes and sun protection. Bring protective gear just in case, drinking water, and work gloves.

Share the Buzz—Volunteer at City Gardens Children's Program!

Do you enjoy working with children or have an interest in honey bees and the environment? We’re looking for volunteers to help bring engaging, hands-on bee education to 10 children, ages 5-13, from City Gardens! This field trip to the LBB's apiary and Willow Springs Park is a special reward the children earned by reaching their summer reading goal.

This is a great opportunity to inspire curiosity, teach students about pollinators, and highlight the important role bees play in our ecosystem. No prior teaching experience is required—just a willingness to learn, connect, and share.

Two groups of five students, ages 5–9 and 10–13, will take turns visiting the LBB apiary and Willow Springs Park. At the apiary, students will put on bee suits and get an up-close look at the inner workings of Italian honey bee colonies. Apiary sessions will be led by Bill Lewis. At Willow Springs Park, students will learn more about honey bees, participate in a hands-on demonstration of how bees collect nectar, build a three-dimensional bee, and plant pollinator-friendly seeds. After approximately one hour, the groups will switch locations so that everyone has the opportunity to participate in both activities. Adult (parent) chaperones will accompany each group throughout the field trip.

Beekeeping 101 - Moore Community Garden (1 Aug 2026)

Beekeeping 101 is an introductory class that will give beginners a glimpse into the secret lives of honeybees. The class includes instruction, discussions, and suiting up to inspect the hives in the bee yard, weather permitting. We invite guests to take the class more than once, as there’s always something new happening in the hive. Recommended for ages 8+.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED, INCLUDING GUESTS. NO DROP-INS OR EXTRA PEOPLE, PLEASE.
No prior experience is needed.
Wear long, THICK, loose, lighter colored pants, such as jeans; CLOSED SHOES, preferably BOOTS, to protect your ankles; and thick long socks. For safety reasons, persons without proper coverage will not be permitted to participate in the hive inspection. NO shorts, leggings, sandals or clogs, ankle socks, etc
Please bring drinking water.
Please provide loaner bee jacket size at the time of registration.
Minimum age is 8 years old.
Be aware: there is always a possibility of bee stings.

NOTE REGARDING SPACE: Beekeeping 101 is currently offered twice a month, at two separate apiaries. Space is limited and the classes fill very quickly. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if a space opens up, or you will get priority registration for the next Beekeeping 101. For children under 8yo, please contact us to be placed on the list for our next "Beekeeping 101 for Kids" class.

Monthly Meeting (2 Aug 2026)

Our August meeting focuses on the Future of Beekeeping. Come here from Kaidyn Bell, James Radojicic and Daniel Sorokin - the youth of today are current and future leaders in their respective communities.

Meetings also feature an opportunity drawing and the ever-popular Honey of the Month tasting, courtesy of Chelsea Fox. What a sweet deal!

We kindly request that any member who would like to request to be added to the agenda email us a minimum of two weeks prior to the meeting.

Long Beach Beekeepers meet on the first Sunday of the month and welcome everyone from the experienced to the novice beekeeper to those just curious about beekeeping. The in-person meeting is open to the general public. Members who opt to attend online will be emailed the meeting link and passcode a day prior to the meeting.

Managing Italian Colonies (8 Aug 2026)

Come join us at Willow Springs Bee Sanctuary, to learn about Italian bees with Bill Lewis. Italian bees display different behaviors and require different care than our local "survivor" bees. Mites must be managed year-round to ensure the colony’s survival. This class is designed for beginner or intermediate beekeepers who need to learn how to manage Italan honeybees. Protective gear is required (suit/jacket, closed shoes, gloves), and drinking water is recommended. This is an ongoing series that takes place approximately every three weeks, and space is limited to 6.

ALL ATTENDEES MUST BE REGISTERED - NO DROP-INS OR ADDITIONAL PEOPLE. Reserve your spot by registering now. Once the class fills, you will be able to join the wait list. We will notify you if anyone cancels, or you will get priority registration for the following event.

This event is free of charge. REGISTRATION FOR ALL ATTENDEES IS REQUIRED and available to club members only.
